Christmas always comes and goes so quickly. This year we were hosting the family get together and it was over in a flash. Lots of gift giving and laughter and bellies full of food, I won't need to eat til next Christmas.
As I've got more confident with my sewing I have felt compelled to make a new dress for every special occasion. This year my two christmas frocks were another take on the Burda 7494 and new retro from Butterick (B5748).
The burda I wore to an earlier christmas gathering with my mum's family.
I used a flora cotton and used a half circle for the skirt again. I
fully lined this dress with a light white cotton and omitted the collar.
And today I wore my retro butterick made from 2 metres of taffeta I bought on sale at spotlight! The pattern asks for over 3 metres but I'm quite short so I was able to squeeze a short full skirt out of it.
As you can see I have tried a handpicked zip, this was my second attempt on this dress. I'm still not 100% happy with it, but I did a much better job on the Burda which also has a handpicked zip. On top of that I spent a lot of time matching the horizontal stripes which I am very proud of!
I love the bow details as well, I felt like I was a Christmas present myself. I am really happy with the end result of this dress, however it was a painful journey!
I am discovering how narrow my shoulders are and how important a muslin is. I had to make the armhole much smaller because the dress was literally falling off me. So I learnt the hard way and with very little fabric to spare for mistakes, that muslins are essential! In summary I have sort of negative memories of making this dress because the bodice stressed me out so much. I have great difficulty deciding which size to cut comparing finished and envelope measurements. And when I finally decided the bodice was HUGE! And the depth of the torso was huge too. It got sorted in the end but the ways are sorted it are probably not using the right techniques.
The bow in my hair is from my Katy Perry inspired outfit, compliments the dress quite well I think.
Hope everyone had a very happy christmas and I am going to vege on the couch for the rest of the eve!
Dear God I LOVE your taffeta dress! It's perfect!
